Skytree is releasing his Crystal Consciousness LP tomorrow and the Drop has a couple of pre-released tracks to dig your roots into. Evan Snyder is a master of taking organic sounds and fusing them into a surreal melody that is sure to calm even the most chaotic of days. You guys loved his piece Ten Thousand Oaks (One of my favorite tracks from Skytree), and this brand new LP is going to feature songs that are a couple steps above that. Just in case you are unfamiliar with his work here’s a bit of a bio to fill you in:
Skytree is Evan Snyder from Minnesota, USA. He started recording music at the age of 15, after
the loan of a beaten Tascam tape deck cracked open the world of multi-track recording. Rough
mix tapes followed, looping degraded swatches of guitar and keys over cheap drum machines.
The Skytree name found its way onto mixes by accident, yet remained, suggesting a sound both
old and new, at once rooted in the Earth and lost in the clouds.
In the years hence, the Skytree name has appeared on half a dozen EPs and albums through
several labels, compilations shared with the likes of Christ. (ex-Boards of Canada), Bassnectar,
Meat Beat Manifesto, Thievery Corporation, Omega, Mimi Page and GoldRush, as well as two
remix albums for jam-band kings Lotus, podcasts such as Solipsistic Nation and
Digital::Nimbus, and an upcoming music video with illusionary dancer David Elsewhere. Live,
Skytree has shared bills with bass masters Bluetech, Phutureprimitive, Ajapai, Excision, Reid
Speed, Freddy Todd, GRiZ, Tipper and Bird of Prey, among others, with many more to come…
Now to the good stuff. The two tracks that we have the privilege of sharing with you today are Agartha and Earth Sing, both unique in there own ways (and trust me… they are unique from pretty much anything you’ve heard before this). These two are available now from the Skytree Bandcamp where you can name your price. Tomorrow, the rest of the LP will drop and the remaining eleven tracks will be yours to pick up. If any of you have listened to his recent track on Bass From Above Volume 2, you know that this LP is going to be a solid release.
Agartha is a mellow, ethereal piece that focuses on deep rhythms and a slow tempo. About mid-track, Skytree delves into some more intricate synth work, which is where I think the piece really stands out. If you’re looking for a song to treck through the woods to, this is it. Give it a listen and pick up a copy below:
Earth Sing falls right in line with the usual Skytree style, but utilizes some stand out vocals to help tie the music together. This track feels very natural, everything seems to work in harmony and Evan does a great job of tying each individual element together.
Did I mention that Skytree also created a video with the help of Ian Hinck and David Elsewhere (yeah, this guy). I’ve had the chance to see it, and I was very impressed. The video drops tomorrow with the release of the EP. Here’s a couple screen shots to let you know what’s up.
There you go, two previews to an LP that is powerfully driving a brand new genre to the eyes of the public. Skytree calls it Skystep, let’s just stick with that. Keep on Droppin.
